Heat pumps fail differently than furnaces
A heat pump is a cooling system running backwards, so winter complaints often trace to parts a furnace does not have: the reversing valve, defrost board, outdoor coil sensor, or the crankcase heater. A brief puff of steam during a defrost cycle is normal. A unit encased in ice, running for an hour without a defrost, or dumping cold air into the house is not.
